Things rarely go as planned in life. Whether we’re talking about writing, our careers, or even what we want to do today. That doesn’t mean that we throw the plans out, but that we have to be flexible.
I had intended to be done with my first draft of Corruption of Blood by now. I’m about 80% through it. I was hoping to be working on completing my first draft of Arena of Night, but I’m still not done with the book that comes before it. Since things aren’t going as planned, what do I do? Revise the plan.
I’m going to finish this book.
The idea for it has been percolating in my mind for over a dozen years. I wanted to run this as a role-playing scenario, but never had a chance. For one thing, running mysteries in a role-playing game is crazy hard. For another, the players have to want to try to solve a mystery, and if all of them aren’t interested, you get bored players. No one likes being bored. If you’re running a game and people are bored, you’re doing it wrong.
So, I never played this scenario, but I really, really liked the idea.
I’m going to finish this book.
I’m at 73,000 words, and I know I’m going to do about another 20,000 to get not only to the end, but resolve some of my subplots. I do about 1500 to 2000 words per day, so to finish this I’m going to need about another 2 weeks of writing.
And that’s the plan.
On top of that, I need to continue to work to meet the goals I’ve set for myself this quarter. I’m behind, so it won’t be easy. Ultimately, nothing worthwhile is.
Next week, I am going to do a post about how the military fits into worldbuilding. This might take more than one post, but we’ll see how it goes.
If there’s something you want me to discuss, just let me know in the comments below. Thanks and see you next week!
